Acrylic vs Glass Mirror

Acrylic weighs roughly half what glass does at equivalent thickness. The weight reduction affects shipping costs, mounting requirements, and structural load on walls. Glass produces sharper reflections but creates safety hazards when broken.

Mirror Construction

Acrylic mirrors start with PMMA sheet material. The polymer itself is transparent. Reflective properties come from a metal layer applied to one surface through vacuum deposition.

The deposition process places acrylic sheets in a chamber pumped down to near-vacuum conditions. Aluminum wire or pellets heat until vaporization occurs. Metal atoms travel through the vacuum and condense on the acrylic surface, building up a coating in the range of 80 to 120 nanometers thick. A protective lacquer then covers the aluminum to slow oxidation from atmospheric moisture.

Silver coating produces higher reflectivity than aluminum. The tradeoff comes in durability. Silver tarnishes when exposed to humidity and airborne sulfur compounds. Mirrors installed in bathrooms or coastal areas see the fastest degradation. Dark spots appear along edges first, then spread across the reflective surface. Most commercial mirror production uses aluminum backing for this reason.

Sheet material quality affects the finished mirror. Cast acrylic has better optical clarity than extruded sheet. The casting process produces material with fewer internal stresses and less surface waviness. Extruded sheet costs less and works adequately for mirrors viewed at arm's length or greater distance. The distinction matters most in large wall mirrors where slight distortions become visible.

Large Format Mirrors

Wall mirror installations for fitness and dance facilities can reach 1220mm by 2440mm from standard sheet stock. Larger dimensions require joining multiple panels.

Acrylic responds to temperature changes more than glass does. Sheets expand and contract enough to cause visible bowing when mounted flat against walls in rooms with unstable temperatures. The problem worsens with thinner material.

Backing panels provide the rigidity that acrylic lacks at large sizes. MDF board works for climate-controlled interiors. Aluminum composite panel handles moisture better for installations near pools or in humid regions. The backing adds weight but keeps the mirror surface flat over years of temperature cycling.

Mounting typically uses adhesive tape rated for the panel weight rather than mechanical fasteners. Screws and bolts create stress concentrations in acrylic that can propagate into cracks over time.

Desktop and Portable Mirrors

Vanity mirrors account for the highest production volume in our facility. The basic configuration places a tiltable mirror panel on a weighted base. Base materials include acrylic sheet, wood, and metal depending on the intended market position.

Cosmetic brands purchase desktop mirrors for retail counter displays and promotional distribution. Hotels specify them for guest room amenities. Sizing ranges from compact travel mirrors under 100mm to tabletop units approaching 400mm.

LED integration adds lighting for makeup application. Even illumination across the mirror surface requires diffusion between the light source and the reflective panel. Direct LED exposure creates visible bright spots. Battery power or USB charging accommodates different use scenarios.

Handheld mirrors gain the most from acrylic's weight advantage over glass. A hand mirror sized to show the full face weighs noticeably less in acrylic, reducing arm fatigue during extended use.

Common Questions

Will acrylic mirrors scratch easily? Acrylic scratches more readily than glass. For high-traffic areas, we recommend protective film during installation and microfiber cleaning cloths only. Surface scratches do not affect structural integrity.

How long does the reflective coating last? Aluminum-coated mirrors maintain reflectivity for 10+ years in normal indoor conditions. Humidity, chemical exposure, and UV light accelerate degradation.

Can you match a specific size for replacement? Yes. Send dimensions and we cut to match existing installations. No minimum for replacement orders when combined with other items.
