Maintenance Acrylic Acquariums

When cleaning an acrylic fish tank, try to use less force than you would if you were cleaning a glass tank.
Always try to avoid products with chemicals, alcohol, and Ammonia, and don't use abrasive materials.
These materials can easily make the aquarium appear foggy and even leave scratches.
What most fish tank owners fail to realize is that acrylic is more sensitive than glass; therefore, acrylic tanks cannot be cleaned in the same way as glass.
Chemicals may tend to fight germs, but they are likely to cause more damage to the surface of your tank, so it is not worth it.
Simply get a clean piece of a soft cloth and make sure it's wet.
If you don't want to constantly wet your cloth, you can also take a spray bottle and fill it with clean water so you can keep spraying the surface you need to clean.
Wipe the glass from all sides and make sure not to miss any edges. Remember – don't wipe too hard, or you might just leave a scratch behind.
When cleaning the tank, turn off the water supply and remove all the fish. This will help you work faster and keep the fish safe.
The water needs to be calm so that grit or sand doesn't float or get between the cleaning tools and the acrylic tank because that can easily result in scratches.
Even one tiny sand particle can cause a lot of damage, so try to be extra careful. Before wiping vigorously, check if the tank walls are clean.
Make sure no particles are floating on the top when you are washing the bottom of the tank.
When it comes to algae, cleaning with water and a cloth won't cut it.
Try using a plastic card or a plastic scraper to remove the algae from the edges of the acrylic fish tank.

FAQ

Q: Why do you have to be careful with acrylic tanks?

A: That being said there is a downfall to owning an acrylic aquarium. They do scratch much easier than glass. When cleaning your acrylic aquarium be careful not to use abrasive towels and harsh chemicals as they can scratch the acrylic surface of the aquarium.

Q: How long should I wait to fill new acrylic aquarium?

A: Be sure to let the tank cure at least a week prior to filling it with water. The longer you can wait, the better.

Q: Is acrylic OK for aquariums?

A: The ideal material for Aquariums and fish tanks, acrylic is sturdy, durable, waterproof, and has the same crystal clear transparency as glass so that you can watch your fish as they go about their day.

Q: Do acrylic aquariums warp?

A: Acrylic (all, not just extruded) absorbs moisture and will *always* cup when used as a tank cover. The top side will become concave and the under (water) side will become convex as it grows due to moisture absorption.

Q: How do I keep my acrylic aquarium clean?

A: Wipe everything down with a soft cloth and rinse with plenty of water. Regular algae-scraping pads are too rough for acrylic. Use an acrylic-safe pad for inside the tank, sump and other filtration gear. One of the biggest fears is scratching the tank while scraping algae, even while using a safe algae scraper.

Q: Do acrylic aquariums turn yellow?

A: When an acrylic aquarium starts to break down because of UV light, either from the sun or aquarium lights, it will turn yellow, become brittle, and can even crack and fail. The more UV lights you have on your tank, or the closer it is to a window, the more accelerated this process will be.

Q: How thick should an acrylic aquarium be?

A: If you want a 0-12 inches high fish tank, the thickness of the sheets should be ¼ inches. For 13-19 inches height, the acrylic glass should be ⅜ inches thick. For a 20-24 inches aquarium, the thickness of plexiglass should be ½ inches.

Q: How do you bond acrylic aquarium?

A: You will need duct tape, weld, and a silicone sealant to attach all of your pieces together. Popular types of acrylic glues and sealants are Momentive RTV6708 Silicone, Acrylic Cement, Weld-On #4 Acrylic Adhesive just to name a few. The most important thing about your sealant is that it should be solvent-based.

Q: Are tanks glass or acrylic?

A: Features: High quality glass construction. For freshwater and marine applications.

Q: Are acrylic aquariums more expensive?

A: If you have ever built your own aquarium or sump, you have likely seen the difference in price between acrylic and glass. Most people may think acrylic is cheaper, but it isn't. The plastic material is more expensive than glass. This does not mean that a glass aquarium will always be cheaper than an acrylic aquarium.

Q: Are acrylic aquariums stronger?

A: Acrylic can be up to more than a dozen times stronger than even the best glass material. When it comes to shear strength acrylic will always be far more impact resistant than glass. Acrylic offers greater strength when it comes to protecting a substantial investment in an aquarium.

Q: Why are aquariums usually made from acrylic?

A: The strength of acrylic tanks give their owners the peace of mind knowing that their tank will not chip, crack, shatter, or blow out unexpectedly. Weight: Acrylic is slightly less than half the weight of glass of the same thickness.

Q: Do acrylic tanks need a mat?

A: This would benefit a rimless aquarium to protect the bottom from scratches and ensure your tank is true. However, aquariums with a floating base, where there is a rim around the bottom to not rest directly on a surface, would not benefit from additional support or padding.

Q: Will Magic Eraser scratch acrylic aquarium?

A: Clean magic eraser original flavor is safe to use inside your tank and isn't supposed to scratch acrylic.

Q: What should not be used to clean an aquarium with?

A: Do not clean the aquarium with soapy water or with cleaning products. You should simply clean the aquarium with hot water. If you wish, you can mix some non-iodized salt in the water you are using to clean the tank.

Q: Will algae in aquarium go away?

A: Uncover the aquarium long enough to feed your fish each day, then cover it up again. In many cases the algae bloom will die off within a few days, but you will still need to address the cause of the bloom. If you don't see results in 48 to 72 hours, another course of action is recommended.

Q: What is the best substrate for acrylic aquariums?

A: Just a matter of a piece of gravel/sand on your acrylic safe pad or wash mitt and there you go! The best I've used white sand, so light and "feels soft". Pool filter sand wasn't bad.

Q: Can you put a heater in an acrylic tank?

A: You'll be fine. And having the heater in with the chaeto is ok. Just turn the chaeto over every couple of days or so.

Q: How much does it cost to build an acrylic aquarium?

A: The cost of building a DIY acrylic aquarium varies on several factors. For instance, the aquarium's size and thickness can vary its overall cost. On average, a 0-12 inches aquarium costs around $150 to $200. Whereas 13-19 inches and 20-24 inches acrylic aquariums will cost around $250-$350 and $350- $400, respectively.
