What is Acrylic Block?

An acrylic block or a stamp block is a piece of thick clear acrylic. It is usually square or rectangular shaped, but there are some circle-shaped and some with ridges or ripples on the edges for easier grip. Unlike rubber or wooden stamps for craft, clear acrylic stamps don't have their own block or platform.

Museum Displays

Museums use acrylic clear blocks to showcase ancient artifacts and fossils, even engraving them with information about what exactly they are and where they were discovered. Smaller versions are marked with numbers or letters to identify and differentiate between multiple objects in a single case.

Picture Frames

A cool alternative to typical picture frames, having photos printed directly onto acrylic clear blocks offers a more dimensional and sculptural feel. Brightly colored photos look great displayed this way because they'll be enhanced by the light-capturing properties of the acrylic.

Privacy Windows

Process of Acrylic Block

Step 1

Purchase a block mold in the shape you desire. You can also make your own mold by brushing several layers of liquid latex onto a block-shaped item, such as a box or a baking pan.

Step 2

Spray the mold with mold release. This will help preserve your mold.

Step 3

Mix casting resin in a cup according to the instructions. Different casting resins require different ratios of resin to hardener, so read the instructions carefully. Mix thoroughly with a craft stick and try to not create bubbles. If you want the resin to be colorful, mix in a small amount of resin dye at this time.

Step 4

Pour the resin into the mold, filling it so the resin is slightly higher than the edge of the mold. Resin shrinks as it cures. Pop any bubbles that you see as quickly as possible. Bubbles will make the item opaque. Remove any surface bubbles by spraying the resin with mold release and encourage bubbles to rise to the top by gently shaking the mold.

Step 5

Spray mold release onto one side of a sheet of glass that is large enough to cover the back of your mold. Carefully place it over the back of the mold.

Step 6

Wait for the resin to cure. The time required will vary depending on the size of your item, the weather conditions and the type of resin.

Maintenance Tips for Acrylic Block

Only use a soft cotton cloth (or microfibre cloth). Sweep your cloth over both sides of your acrylic to remove any loose dust or dirt. Spray a small amount of Acrylic Cleaner such as VuPlex onto a different soft cotton cloth–wipe this onto your acrylic. Wipe gently until the cleaner is totally gone.
