Acrylic Aquarium: Pros vs Glass Tanks
So this happened yesterday. A hotel in Pattaya-nice place, 4-star, been there since like 2018 or 19 I think-their 220G lobby tank started leaking. Not dripping. Leaking. The facilities manager sent me photos at 6 AM their time and I could see water pooling on the marble floor.
Glass tank. Seven years old. Bottom seam just... gave up.
The aquarium company that installed it? Gone. Literally can't find them anymore. Website's down, phone disconnected, their WeChat account hasn't posted since 2021. So guess who gets the call? Yeah.

Here's the thing that pisses me off: I BID on that original project. Lost to these guys because they came in ฿47,000 cheaper (that's like $1,300-ish USD). Client went with price. And now seven years later I'm the one on a video call watching their maintenance guy try to transfer 50+ fish into buckets while water spreads across their lobby floor.
This is the third glass failure I've seen this year. Not scratches-I mean actual structural failures. And I'm done pretending it's just "bad luck" or "poor installation." There's a pattern here, and it always starts around year 5-8 when the silicone starts breaking down.
Look, I still spec glass for smaller tanks. Under 150G, sometimes up to 180G if the situation's right. But anything bigger than that? I'm pushing acrylic hard. Not because we make more money on it (we actually don't), but because I'm tired of getting emergency calls.
Built-In vs Freestanding (This Matters Way More Than Tank Size)
When someone contacts us about a project, first question is always: "Can you move this tank if you need to, or is it going to be permanent?"
Built-in installations-integrated into walls, behind bars, part of the actual architecture-these scare me when they're glass. Because eventually, that silicone's going to need attention. Maybe 7 years, maybe 10, maybe 15 if you're lucky. But it's coming.
And when it does? You're not just draining a tank. You're potentially demolishing cabinetry, cutting into walls, coordinating with contractors. I saw this play out at a resort in Thailand-can't remember if it was Phuket or Krabi, somewhere south-where a built-in 200G glass tank developed a leak around year 8. Insurance covered the water damage, but the property was offline for weeks during their busy season while they tore everything apart.
With acrylic you're bonding panels with solvent welding. When it's done properly-and I mean PROPERLY, not rushed by some guy who's trying to hit schedule-you're creating one continuous piece of material. The seams on Monterey Bay's big viewing window are from 1984. Still there. Still holding.
Glass uses silicone. Silicone degrades. It's just chemistry.
For freestanding tanks that you can hypothetically pull out and replace without a major construction project? Glass is way less scary. Reseal it on-site if you need to, or just swap it out for a new one. But permanent architectural installations? I really don't want to be explaining to a hotel owner why they need to rip apart their lobby every 10 years.
The Weight Thing (Everyone Underestimates This Until It's Too Late)
Had this restaurant project in Jakarta-wait, was it Jakarta or Surabaya? Doesn't matter, somewhere in Java-they wanted a 200-something gallon tank as a room divider. Second floor. Architect originally spec'd glass because "it's clearer" or whatever bullshit reason.
I told the owner: your floor joists can't handle it. Not without sistering in additional support. Which means cutting into the ceiling below, running new posts, probably permits, definitely money.
"How much money?"
I don't remember the exact quote-this was like 2 years ago-but it was something insane. ₹6 juta? ₹8 juta? Somewhere in that range. And the architect was pissed because it meant reworking their first-floor layout to accommodate support columns that weren't in the original design.
Client asked: what if we go acrylic?
So I ran the numbers again. Acrylic tank itself was actually MORE expensive-like $800 or $1k more than the glass option. But suddenly we don't need the structural work. Floor load rating handles it fine. No columns cutting through the dining room below.

Total installed cost ended up being ₹5 juta LESS than the glass option even though the tank cost more. Client approved it in like two days.
This is what I mean when I say "weight matters"-it's not about the spec sheet saying "50% lighter." It's about whether you need to call a structural engineer. Whether you need permits. Whether you're drilling into concrete or just setting it on the existing floor.
Glass at 200G+? You're probably looking at structural assessment minimum. Maybe reinforcement. Definitely more install crew (try moving a 200G glass tank with 2 people-you can't, you need at least 4).
Acrylic? Two guys and a dolly if you're careful. No engineering. Client saves money even though the material costs more.
But nobody thinks about this until the architect or the building management company starts asking questions.
The 150-180G Gray Zone (Where It Gets Messy)
Okay so everyone wants a clean answer: "At what size do I switch from glass to acrylic?"
I usually say 180G. But that's like... a guideline, not a law. I've spec'd glass at 200G and acrylic at 120G depending on the situation.
It's more about the combination of factors:
If the tank is freestanding (meaning you can hypothetically drain it and move it without demolishing anything), and it's under 180G, and you have professional maintenance, and you're ground floor or have confirmed structural capacity → glass is probably fine and saves you money.
If ANY of these is false, you should seriously consider acrylic:
- Built-in installation (nightmare to reseal later)
- Second floor or higher without structural confirmation
- Maintenance by non-professionals
- You want custom shapes (glass is flat rectangles only)
- You're in an earthquake zone (acrylic flexes, glass cracks)
That Scottsdale hotel I mentioned with the scratched acrylic? 180G, freestanding, they went with acrylic because they wanted a curved bow-front. Couldn't do that with glass. But if they'd wanted a standard rectangular tank and had professional maintenance, I might have recommended glass just to avoid the scratch risk.
See what I mean? It's not the size alone.
The other factor nobody talks about: how long do you plan to keep this?
If this is a 5-year lease and you might be renovating anyway, glass is less risky financially. Tank lasts 5-7 years, you're probably fine, worst case you deal with resealing once.
If this is a permanent architectural feature that you expect to last 15-20 years... acrylic starts looking better. Because you're NOT going to want to reseal a built-in glass tank two or three times over that period. Each time risks damage, each time is disruptive, each time costs money.
This is the stuff that's hard to write about in a general blog post because it's so specific to each project. Which is also why we end up doing consultations instead of just sending quotes.
Yeah, Acrylic Scratches. We Know. Can We Move On?
I'm so tired of this argument. "But acrylic scratches so easily!"
You know what else happens? Glass tanks flood your building because the silicone failed. Pick your problem.
Look, scratching is real. I'm not denying it. We had a hotel in Scottsdale-nice property, probably 200 rooms-their 180G lobby tank looked like absolute shit after 18 months because their housekeeping staff kept using the magnetic cleaner wrong. They'd drag it across the panel even when there was sand stuck in it. Front panel looked like someone took 80-grit sandpaper to the whole thing.
Could we fix it? Yeah. We drained the tank, moved the livestock to temporary holding, spent like 6 hours wet sanding through progressively finer grits (I think we went 800→1200→2000→3000, then Novus compound), and got it back to like 95% clarity. Client was happy. Cost them maybe $1,200 in labor plus our travel.
But here's the thing everyone misses: glass scratches too. Not from algae cleaners-you can scrape glass with a razor blade all day. But from installation damage? From something hitting it during construction? From manufacturing defects that show up later? Yeah, that happens.
And when glass scratches, you're done. That's it. You either live with it or you replace the entire panel.
When acrylic scratches, it's annoying and it costs money to fix, but it's FIXABLE.
The real question isn't "which material scratches" but "who's maintaining this thing?" If you've got a professional aquarium maintenance company that knows what they're doing-acrylic is fine. If it's going to be random hotel staff who rotate every six months and nobody's training them properly-maybe glass makes more sense because at least they can't destroy it with a cleaning tool.
We actually put this in our contracts now: if client goes with acrylic, we require documentation of staff training on cleaning procedures, or they sign off that they're using our maintenance service. Too many disasters from untrained people with magnetic cleaners.
The Supplier Thing That Nobody Talks About (Until It's Too Late)
This is where shit gets scary.
Not all "acrylic aquarium panels" are the same material. Like, literally different manufacturing processes, different properties, different failure modes. And most clients have no idea.
There's cell-cast acrylic-this is what Georgia Aquarium uses, what Dubai Mall uses, what every major installation uses. You pour liquid acrylic between glass sheets, let it cure slow, you get thick panels with stable molecular structure. Can go up to 800mm thick. Lasts decades.
Then there's extruded acrylic. Cheaper. Thinner (maxes out around 20-25mm). Made by squeezing molten plastic through a die. Has internal stresses. Crazes easily. Yellows faster.
Extruded should never, EVER be used for aquariums.
But here's the problem: some suppliers will quote extruded and just call it "acrylic" without specifying. Client sees the lower price, approves it, supplier pockets the difference.
I know of at least two projects where this happened:
One was in Manila-I wanna say 2019? Maybe 2020? Hotel wanted a 300-liter cylindrical tank for their lobby. Contractor sourced it locally, super cheap price. Tank looked fine when installed. About a year later, started developing these weird stress marks. Like little crazing lines spreading across the panel. By 18 months it looked cloudy. By 2 years one of the seams actually failed and it flooded their lobby.
The contractor? Disappeared. Company dissolved. Good luck suing someone who doesn't exist anymore.
Other one was Guangzhou-bigger project, resort property. Similar story but I heard they caught it earlier. Still cost them like ¥180,000 to replace because they had to tear out the built-in installation.
This is why when we quote, we ALWAYS specify: cell-cast acrylic, UV stabilized, manufacturer datasheet required. If a client comes back with "we found it cheaper elsewhere," first thing I ask is "did they specify cell-cast or just 'acrylic'?"
Nine times out of ten, the cheaper quote is either:
- Extruded material (disaster waiting to happen)
- Cell-cast without UV stabilizers (will yellow in 5-10 years)
- "Import equivalent" that's actually thinner than spec (saw one where they quoted 6mm panels that were actually 5mm)
- Or they just can't provide documentation proving what they're selling
We've lost projects to cheaper bids. That's fine. What keeps me up at night is wondering which of those clients are going to call me in 3-5 years when their tank fails.
Look, Here's What We Actually Do Different
I'm not going to bullshit you-Ouke Display isn't the only company that can source good acrylic panels. There are other reputable suppliers. What separates us is we've been burned enough times that we're paranoid about the details.
We only work with manufacturers that supply the big boys. Reynolds, Nippura, the companies that build panels for Georgia Aquarium and Dubai Mall. Not distributors. Not "we also do acrylic" plastic fabricators. The actual manufacturers. This matters because when something goes wrong-and eventually something always goes wrong-we can trace it back to the source.
We do engineering review on everything over 150G. Not just "here's your panel, good luck." We look at your floor loads, your building type, access limitations, how you're going to maintain it. Had a client last month who wanted a 280G built-in-turned out the only access to that wall was through a doorway that was 30cm too narrow for the panel. Had to redesign the whole thing as modular sections that could be bonded on-site.
If we'd just sold them the panel without checking? Installation disaster.
Our install crews have done this specific thing dozens of times. Not GCs who "also do aquariums sometimes." Not first-timers following a YouTube video. People who understand why you don't rush the bonding process, why curing time matters, why you check levelness three times before filling.
The Manila disaster I mentioned earlier? I'm like 80% sure the seam failure was because someone rushed the Weld-On curing. You're supposed to wait 24-48 hours depending on conditions. I bet they filled it after 12 hours because client was pushing schedule. Then two years later, boom.
Can you find cheaper quotes than us? Absolutely. Will they be using cell-cast from verified sources? Maybe. Maybe not.
And "maybe not" is how you end up with a $35,000 lobby installation that needs to be torn out in 18 months.
What I'm NOT Telling You (And Why)
Look, I'm giving you a lot here. Probably more than most suppliers would in a public post. But there's stuff I'm deliberately not writing about:
Specific supplier evaluation criteria beyond the basics. Like, how do you actually verify a bonding technique is done right when you're looking at a finished panel? What are the telltale signs that someone cut corners during fabrication? Which manufacturers had QC issues 3-4 years ago that they've since fixed (or haven't)?
This is competitive intelligence. Took years to figure out. I'm not just giving it away.
Exact engineering calculations for panel thickness, safety factors, structural loading. Yeah, I could drop formulas. But if you're interpreting them wrong or applying them to the wrong building type, you're going to end up with an under-spec'd tank. And "close enough" doesn't count when you're holding back 200+ gallons of water.
Supplier pricing dynamics and negotiation strategies. When to push back on a quote, when to accept it, what the actual margin structures look like, where the real costs are hiding. If I publish this, it just makes everyone's job harder including mine.
The really detailed horror stories with enough specifics to identify the properties. Some are still in litigation. Others are just... people had a bad enough time without me putting it on Google permanently.
This post gives you enough to know what questions to ask and what red flags to watch for. The deep expertise-the stuff that actually separates a $40K installation that lasts 20 years from a $37K installation that fails in 18 months-that's consultation-level knowledge.
Not trying to be coy about it. Some knowledge has value specifically because it's not freely available. And honestly, this stuff applied incorrectly is worse than not knowing it.
The Stuff We Need to Know (That You Probably Haven't Thought About)
Every project is different. I can give you general rules-glass under 150G, acrylic over 180G-200G, somewhere in between it depends. But the actual answer requires knowing things about your specific situation that I can't guess from a blog post.
When people contact us, here's usually how the conversation goes:
Me: "Where's this going? What floor?"
Client: "Lobby, ground floor."
Me: "Okay, concrete slab or raised foundation?"
Client: "Uhh..."
See, this matters. Ground floor on concrete? Weight probably doesn't matter much. Ground floor on raised foundation? Might still need assessment.
Me: "Built-in or freestanding?"
Client: "What's the difference?"
Built-in means it's part of your architecture. Integrated into walls, permanent installation. If something goes wrong, you're potentially tearing apart cabinetry or cutting into walls to fix it. This is where silicone degradation becomes a nightmare.
Freestanding means it's furniture. You can move it. Drain it. Replace it if needed. Way less scary for glass.
Me: "Who's maintaining it?"
Client: "We'll have our facilities team do it."
Me: "Do they have aquarium experience?"
Client: "...no?"
This is where the acrylic scratch risk comes in. Professional maintenance company? Not worried. Rotating hotel staff? Need to think about it.
Me: "What's the actual budget including installation?"
Client: "We haven't really figured that out yet."
Okay cool, so we're still in the dreaming phase. That's fine, but installation can easily cost as much as the tank itself depending on complexity.
There's usually like five more questions depending on what they tell me-seismic zone, existing plumbing, access for equipment, whether they want saltwater or freshwater (totally different maintenance requirements).
Point is: the right answer is specific to your project. Sometimes it's acrylic. Sometimes it's glass. Sometimes it's "your budget needs to be 40% higher for this to work properly" or "that location isn't going to work, let's talk about alternatives."
This is why we do consultations before quoting. Not trying to upsell-sometimes we tell people to go smaller, go simpler, or go with a different material. We just need to understand what we're actually dealing with.
If You're Shopping Around Right Now, Do This
Few things I've learned from watching projects go right and wrong:
Get multiple quotes, but make sure you're actually comparing the same thing. I've seen quote spreadsheets where one supplier is quoting cell-cast, another is quoting extruded, another doesn't specify at all, and the client just sees three different prices with no idea why.
Ask specifically: "Is this cell-cast acrylic with UV stabilizers?" If they don't know what you're talking about, or if they say "it's all the same," find someone else.
Think past the purchase price. I know budgets are tight, I get it. But a glass tank that's $2k cheaper to buy might cost you $5k more to install if you need structural work. Or it might not-depends on your building. You won't know until someone looks at the actual situation.
And think about year 5. Year 7. If this thing's built into a wall and the silicone needs resealing, what's that going to cost? How disruptive is it?
Check with your insurance. Some commercial policies have specific clauses about water features. One client found out AFTER installation that their policy specifically excluded damage from aquariums over 200 gallons. Had to get a rider added. Would've been nice to know beforehand.
If it's over 200G, talk to someone who's done this before. Could be us, could be another specialist. But this isn't the kind of project where you learn by doing. The learning-by-doing projects are the ones that flood your lobby at 3 AM.
One more thing: be skeptical of suppliers who:
- Won't provide material datasheets
- Can't explain the difference between cell-cast and extruded
- Quote suspiciously low compared to others (they're either cutting corners on material or they're going to make it up elsewhere)
- Don't ask you ANY questions about your building or installation conditions
Good suppliers will ask you annoying questions about floor loads and building codes. That's because they're actually thinking about whether your project will work, not just whether they can sell you something.
Why I Wrote This (And What to Do Next)
I started writing this after dealing with that Pattaya disaster yesterday. Spent the whole day on calls trying to coordinate emergency fixes for a problem that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
This is like the third or fourth time this year someone's contacted us AFTER their glass tank failed asking if we can fix it. And every time it's the same story: they went with glass because it was cheaper upfront, didn't think about long-term risks, and now they're dealing with flooded floors and panicking clients.
So I figured I'd write down what I keep telling people. Not all of it-there's stuff that's genuinely project-specific that I can't address without knowing your situation. But enough that maybe someone reads this before they make decisions, not after things go wrong.
