Clear vs Frosted Acrylic for Retail
I still remember when frosted acrylic first showed up in any real volume. Around 2009–2010, a couple of European cosmetics brands started using it for lightboxes and counter dividers. Overnight half the Chinese factories had to buy sand-blasting cabinets. Before that it was 95 % clear, 5 % everything else. Today it's more like 55/45 and still moving.
Light Transmission Numbers That Actually Matter
Clear cast (Mitsubishi, Yingli, etc.): 92–93 % in 3 mm. I've run thousands of sheets through a BYK haze-gard; anything below 91 % gets sent back. Standard both-side frosted (medium grit): 68–74 %. Fine one-side frosted: 78–82 %. Half-and-half (one side clear, one side frosted): 84–87 %. That's the current darling of every beauty brand in Shanghai.
Scratch Resistance and Fingerprints in Real Stores
Clear shows every fingerprint the second a customer touches it. Frosted hides them completely. That single fact flipped most cosmetic counters from clear to frosted between 2018 and 2020. Deep scratches still show on frosted once you cut past the texture, but day-to-day it looks cleaner longer.
Impact Strength and Long-Term Durability
Both are roughly 17× the impact resistance of glass. Clear can be flame-polished or buffed if it gets scratched; frosted can't. Luxury stores still prefer 4–6 mm clear with removable protective film because they can peel it off and look brand-new in seconds.

The Thicknesses We Actually Ship to Retail Jobs
1.5–2 mm → back-lit logos, hanging price tags, light panels
3 mm → the 90 % solution: shelves, sneeze guards, POS stands
4.5–6 mm → shoe risers, perfume displays
8 mm and up → full-height barriers or load-bearing counter tops
Pricing Right Now – Shenzhen Area, Delivered (2024-2025)
3 mm clear cast: RMB 48–56 / m² (full 1220×2440 sheet) 3 mm both-side frosted: RMB 68–78 3 mm one-side frosted (half-clear): RMB 85–98 Laser or CNC cutting adds RMB 25–40 / m² depending on complexity and quantity.
UV Yellowing: What Really Happens in Shop Windows
Cheap domestic clear turns yellow in 12–18 months behind glass. Good imported sheet with proper UV stabilizer stays water-clear for 7–10 years even in direct sun. Frosted yellows at the same rate internally, but the texture masks it-so most clients don't notice or care.

Bending, Drilling, and Fabrication Tricks
Under 2 mm you can cold-bend frosted all day long. 3 mm and thicker, heat it first or it cracks along the grain. Drilling clear needs new sharp bits and coolant; frosted you can get away with almost anything and the chipped edge disappears in the texture.
The Only Three Questions I Ask Clients Anymore
Do you need to see the product clearly behind the panel? Yes → clear. No → frosted or half-clear.
Is the light coming from the front or from behind? Behind → frosted or half-clear every time.
What's your budget per square meter? Tight → domestic clear. Relaxed → imported + frosted.
Ninety percent of orders are decided in thirty seconds with those three questions.

Clear vs Frosted in 2025 Retail – The Bottom Line
If the product itself is the hero → stay clear. If mood, lighting, and Instagram photos are the hero → go frosted or half-clear.
Everything else is just negotiation on thickness and price.
