Collectible Display Box: Funko Pop Edition

Last September a purchasing manager surnamed Chen from Atlanta reached out about 800 display cases. His previous supplier delivered cases that yellowed after six months on the sales floor, specifically the row near the windows. I had him ship samples back and cut them open. The problem was obvious: recycled content mixed into the material. We do not use recycled acrylic, but plenty of suppliers do. That order took us three weeks to fulfill, and expedited shipping alone cost him over four thousand dollars.

Honestly, most content about Funko Pop display cases online targets individual collectors debating whether to spend $8 on soft protectors or $15 on hard shells. But if you need 500 units or more, that is a completely different conversation.

Funko Pop Sizing Is More Complicated Than You Think

Standard 4-inch Pop boxes measure approximately 6.25 × 4.5 × 3.5 inches. But Funko produces at least fifteen different size categories, from 1.5-inch Pocket Pops to 18-inch Super Sized figures. Universal sizing does not exist. Anyone telling you one display case fits all sizes either has not worked this market or is misleading you.

Our approach now is to categorize by Funko's official Size Categories. We keep stock tooling for standard 4-inch, 6-inch, and 10-inch formats. Other sizes require custom tooling, typically $200-400 depending on complexity, but that cost becomes negligible when spread across 500+ units.

Vinyl material fades under UV exposure. Collectors know this. What many do not realize is that chrome finishes and metallic paint are three to five times more sensitive than standard figures. I have seen a Chrome Blue Vegeta displayed near a window for a year with visible color degradation on the exposed side. The box itself was fine. Direct sunlight caused the damage.

For storage conditions, 60-75°F temperature and 40-50% humidity is the collectibles standard. But retail environments rarely achieve that precision, which is why UV blocking rate becomes the critical specification for display cases.

Why We Only Use Cast Acrylic

I will give you the conclusion directly on material selection: we only use cast acrylic. We do not work with glass. We do not work with polycarbonate.

Acrylic delivers 92% light transmission, the highest among all transparent materials. Glass is similar at 90-92%, but weighs twice as much. A 20-foot container holds roughly 600 glass display cases versus 1,200 acrylic cases. Shipping costs double. Glass shatters completely on impact while acrylic cracks but maintains its shape. That difference matters in retail environments.

Why We Only Use Cast Acrylic

Polycarbonate has superior impact resistance, theoretically 250 times stronger than glass. But light transmission drops to 86-88%, a visible difference. Without coating, it yellows faster than acrylic. Some suppliers push PC material claiming it is shatterproof, but display cases are not meant to be thrown around. No point sacrificing optical quality for strength you will never use.

Acrylic itself comes in two types: cast and extruded. Under ASTM D4802, cast grades as A-1/A-2, extruded as B-1/B-2. Cast has higher molecular weight and better surface hardness. Costs 15-25% more. In 2023 we had a client choose extruded to save money. 300 cases. Eight months later, fine scratches covered all the stacking contact points. Replacing them with cast material ended up costing more than ordering cast from the start.

Extruded is not unusable, just unsuitable for applications requiring frequent handling or stacking. If your display cases stay in place permanently, extruded can work.

What Prices Actually Look Like

I get asked this question constantly. Prices found online are either retail markups or unrealistically low quotes designed to capture inquiries.

Here are some real reference points from orders we actually closed in Q4 2024:

Quantity Closing Price Notes
500 pcs $9.80/unit Los Angeles client, standard 4-inch, magnetic closure
1,200 pcs $7.60/unit Chicago distributor, three sizes mixed
300 pcs $11.50/unit Rush order, UV coating included

FOB Shenzhen, shipping not included. Add approximately $4-5 for landed cost in the US, covering ocean freight allocation, duties, and customs clearance.

Regarding tariffs, acrylic display cases fall under HS 3926.90.9890. Base rate is 5.3%. Section 301 additional duties currently run 25-40% depending on how customs classifies your shipment. Some suppliers suggest underreporting declared value to reduce duties. We do not participate in that. If problems arise, they are yours to handle.

Suppliers quoting $5 or lower? Ask whether they use extruded material, whether UV coating is included, what wall thickness they provide. $5 production is possible, but quality will not be impressive.

Whether UV Protection Is Worth the Extra Cost

UV coating adds roughly $3-5 per unit depending on size and volume.

Whether it is worth adding depends on your display environment. A few decision criteria:

  • If your store has large glass facades or window-adjacent display positions, add it.
  • If inventory turnover exceeds 90 days, add it.
  • If you sell limited editions, signed pieces, or Chase variants with higher value, add it.

If usage is warehouse storage, completely dark environments, or fast-turnover consignment models, standard material works fine.

Standard acrylic naturally blocks 40-60% of UV radiation, but blocking in the 285-400nm wavelength range is insufficient. UV coating with HALS or benzotriazole stabilizers achieves 95-98% blocking. The difference is substantial.

We ran comparison tests ourselves. Same window position for two years. The standard acrylic case itself began yellowing, and the white packaging box inside showed visible fading on the exposed face. The UV-coated case showed no detectable change.

But I do not recommend adding UV coating to every order. If your store has thirty display positions and only eight are near windows, buy eight UV units and twenty-two standard units. The savings can fund two more grails.

How Display Cases Actually Affect Sales

How Display Cases Actually Affect Sales

I was not going to write this section in detail, but many purchasing managers need to justify this expense to their bosses. A few data points.

Retail has a repeatedly validated pattern: impulse purchases account for roughly 60% of collectible buying. Display method directly influences impulse conversion.

We ran an AB test at a client store in Chicago. Same products, same prices. One side used display cases with LED lighting, the other side used open shelving. Three months of data showed the display case section outselling by 137%. Not every store will hit that number, but 20-50% improvement is common feedback.

The US retail industry loses over $125 billion annually due to display-related issues according to GlobalData. Display cases solve more than aesthetics. They prevent dust accumulation, discourage handling, reduce customer damage, and establish perceived value.

Eye-level positions convert best. You probably know this already. Grails over $50 belong at 4-6 foot height. Commons fill lower shelves. LED lighting is not mandatory, but lit areas definitely capture more attention.

How to Evaluate Quality

I will cover a few key points here. Detailed craftsmanship questions you can ask us directly.

Edge finishing is where problems show up fastest. Laser-cut acrylic edges have a natural flame-polished effect and should be smooth and glossy. If you feel roughness or see haziness, that indicates CNC cutting without proper polishing, or polishing shortcuts.

Bonding sequence matters too. Professional fabrication bonds first, then polishes. Reversed sequence causes polishing to seal the surface layer, which reduces solvent penetration and joint strength. Cases assembled wrong may develop stress cracking within two to three years. Ask suppliers whether they bond first or polish first. Those who can answer clearly are generally reliable.

Tolerance stacking becomes a major issue for stacked displays. Single-unit tolerance of ±0.2mm seems minor. Stack ten cases and worst-case deviation reaches 2mm. Looks crooked. For displays above five units high, specify ±0.1mm tolerance when ordering. Adds 8-12% to cost but presentation improves dramatically.

How to identify recycled content? I will not expand on that here. Ask me and I can walk you through a few simple tests.

Minimum Order and Lead Time

Our standard MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU. Industry convention, not our rule.

If you need smaller quantities under 50 pieces, we can accommodate that, but unit price increases 30-40%. Sometimes that makes sense. Sometimes ordering from a US domestic fabricator is more practical. For orders under 200 units, factoring in time costs and communication overhead, local sourcing may be more reasonable.

For lead time, standard orders around 500 pieces ship in 35-45 days, not including transit. Ocean freight to US West Coast takes approximately 15-20 days. US East Coast runs 25-35 days. Rush orders can compress to around 20 days with expedite fees, though peak season capacity is not guaranteed.

Christmas season and convention season capacity gets tight. If you have large orders for the second half of the year, lock in scheduling before June. Last year a client inquired about SDCC series replenishment in early November. Production capacity simply could not accommodate them.

Next Steps

If you are evaluating suppliers or have specific projects requiring quotes, reach out directly. Send quantity, sizes, and usage scenario. We respond same day or next day.

Factory is in Shenzhen. Visits can be arranged if needed. But honestly, unless you are looking at tens of thousands of units or long-term partnership potential, I recommend starting with a small trial order to evaluate quality first.
