Global Acrylic Market Growth Analysis
Kuraray sold their Zhangjiagang plant last December. Deal closes Q1 2026, going to Shuangxiang Group. If you're still sourcing from them, start looking for alternatives now.
Not an isolated case. Mitsubishi Chemical, Sumitomo, Asahi Kasei all shut down overseas PMMA lines in the past three years. Reason is simple: MMA spot price in Eastern China dropped below RMB 9,000/ton early 2025, five-year low. ACH process still makes about RMB 880/ton. C4-route plants? Losing RMB 35/ton on average. Foreign manufacturers without integrated feedstock can't compete on unit cost anymore.
Domestic Chinese capacity hit 735,350 tons/year by end of 2024. Up 18.5% year-over-year. Another 1.5 million tons in the pipeline. Zhejiang Petrochemical's 180,000 tons/year project, single-train 60,000 tons largest in the world, comes online late 2025. Commodity pricing will reset again.
How Big Is the Market Really
Global Info Research says USD 63.1 billion by 2031, 5.2% CAGR. Asia-Pacific 35.3% share. Cast sheets 51.7% of product mix. (globalinforesearch.com)
These numbers don't help much with procurement decisions.
The structural issue matters more. All the capacity expansion is in general-purpose grades. Optical-grade PMMA domestic self-sufficiency still under 40%. Medical-grade 80%+ import-dependent. High-end market still controlled by Röhm, Chi Mei, Trinseo, over 70% of premium capacity globally.
Buying standard extruded sheet for indoor POP displays, you'll have more supplier options and prices will keep dropping. Buying cell-cast for outdoor lightboxes with specific light transmission, UV stabilization, low-haze requirements, supplier relationships matter more than before. Lead times are stretching.
What Happens When You Pick Wrong Material
Most problems we see aren't "bad quality" in an obvious sense. Wrong grade for the application.
Cast vs extruded, depends what you're making:
| What you're doing | Cast or Extruded | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor lightbox, 5+ years | Cast, UV-stabilized | Extruded yellows and cracks in 2-3 years |
| Indoor retail display, 1-2 years | Extruded is fine | 30-40% cheaper, replacing anyway |
| Laser engraving | Cast | Extruded burns, edges turn yellow |
| Flame polishing | Cast | Extruded tends to crack |
| High volume standard sizes | Continuous-cast | Tighter thickness tolerance |
| Custom thick shapes | Cell-cast | Can go up to 200mm thick |
How to tell if your material is cast or extruded? Cut a 1-inch circle, wipe with denatured alcohol. Extruded cracks on the spot. Cast, no reaction. We've caught mislabeled shipments this way more than once.
Light transmission gets overlooked. Cast sheet 92%, extruded 89-91%. Two or three points doesn't show on small lightboxes. On large backlit surfaces, very noticeable.
LED Lightbox Thickness
Question we get asked most. Also where mistakes happen most.
One rule: panel thickness must exceed LED strip height. 12mm tall strips with 10mm panel, you'll get hot spots. Seen a job where someone used 6mm panel with 15mm LED modules. Turned it on, looked like Christmas lights behind the face. Complete redo.
How thick for what depth:

Depth: Under 3 inches
3mm panel is enough
LED strip spacing 2-3 inches.
Depth: 3 to 5 inches
Use 4-6mm
Spacing 3-4 inches. Most retail jobs fall here.
Depth: 5 to 7 inches
Standard is 6mm
Spacing 4-5 inches. Majority of projects in this range.
Depth: Over 7 inches
6-10mm
Spacing 5-6 inches (large monument signs).
Light guide panels have another requirement. Must be 100% virgin resin, no recycled content. Optical-grade clarity, low birefringence. (astraproducts.com) Dot pattern technology matters too. Laser-etched lasts about 10 years. UV screen-printed, maybe 2 years before yellowing affects uniformity.
What Things Actually Cost
Looking at material cost per square foot alone is maybe 30% of total cost of ownership.
Material price and lifespan
| Material | 6mm price USD/sq ft | Outdoor life |
|---|---|---|
| Cast UV-stabilized | 20-32 | 8-15 years |
| Cast standard | 16-26 | 5-10 years |
| Extruded | 15-25 | 5-8 years |
| Polycarbonate | 22-36 | 5-10 years, yellows without UV coat |
| PVC foam | 5-10 | 1-3 years outdoor |
PC runs 30-35% more than acrylic. Better impact resistance, good for vandal-prone areas. But without UV coating yellows faster than acrylic. Highway monument sign, UV-stabilized cast at 8-15 year life beats PC at 5-10 years, even starting at lower cost.
UV-stabilized vs standard cast, about 20% price difference. Don't skip this on outdoor jobs. Indoor, doesn't matter.

Manhattan fashion boutique
Invested $12,000 in LED backlit brushed aluminum signage. Google Maps data showed 38% more foot traffic, in-store sales up 22% year-over-year. ROI hit 315% in two years.
Brooklyn tech company
Spent $18,000 on LED acrylic signage with digital wayfinding. Employee satisfaction up 24%, recruiting improved.
Restaurant chain
7 locations, LED channel letters. Local Google searches up 9%, dine-in reservations up 15%.
LED lightbox payback usually 12-24 months from electricity savings alone. Not counting labor for lamp changes.
Where to Source
North America roughly USD 1.98 billion. Plaskolite dominates, 16+ plants, only North American producer running all three methods: extrusion, continuous-cast, cell-cast. Their Run-to-Size helps for non-standard dimensions.
Europe USD 1.5-2.1 billion, Germany leads. Röhm's PLEXIGLAS and Trinseo's ALTUGLAS are premium tier. Trinseo bought the PMMA business from Arkema for EUR 1.14 billion in 2021.
Easy to mix up: PLEXIGLAS is Röhm's trademark in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia. In the Americas, PLEXIGLAS belongs to Trinseo. Röhm uses ACRYLITE in the Americas. Get this wrong on specs, causes problems.
Main suppliers
| Company | Location | Main brands | Strength | Price tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plaskolite | Ohio USA | OPTIX | All 3 methods, fast custom | Mid-high |
| Röhm | Germany | PLEXIGLAS, ACRYLITE | LED series, 30-yr no-yellow warranty | High |
| Trinseo | Pennsylvania USA | ALTUGLAS | Sylk diffusion, R-Life recycled | Mid-high |
| Chi Mei | Taiwan | ACRYREX | Volume, competitive price | Low-mid |
| Wanhua | China | Various | General purpose, expanding to optical | Low |
| Shuangxiang | China | Various | General + breaking into optical | Low-mid |
Asia-Pacific excluding China, about USD 550-630 million. India fastest at 11% CAGR, automotive and electronics. Japan USD 157 million, 7.7%. South Korea USD 114 million, 8.3%, mostly display panels.
For outdoor backlit signage, industry standard is Plexiglas 7328 white diffusion. Enough light transmission but can't see the LED array behind it. Use clear or insufficient diffusion, turn it on and you see rows of bright dots. Looks terrible.
Recycled Content Options

Trinseo's PMMA depolymerization plant in Rho, Italy started June 2024. Chemical recycling produces ALTUGLAS R-Life, 70% lower carbon footprint vs virgin. Modulex Green Cast uses 100% recycled MMA, 75% lower footprint. Their Billund factory runs on carbon-neutral power.
Plaskolite OPTIX-R goes up to 95% post-industrial recycled content.
For brands with ESG requirements, these recycled options now available at commercial scale. Price premium narrowing. Some applications, performance same as virgin.
Bio-based acrylic still early. Expected to grow from USD 2 billion 2024 to USD 6.4 billion 2034, 12.3% CAGR.
What To Do Now
Market is bifurcating. Commodity grades keep dropping as Chinese capacity comes online. Premium grades may rise as Japanese and European producers rationalize and focus on higher margins.
Indoor short-term display, extruded at $6-12/sq ft does the job.
Outdoor 5+ year project, UV-stabilized cast at $20-32/sq ft. Reduced replacement cycles pay back the difference. Want insurance, pick PLEXIGLAS or ACRYLITE with documented UV warranty.
LED lightbox conversion, ROI works in almost every scenario. 12-24 month payback, then it's all savings.
Sustainability requirements, recycled lines from Trinseo, Modulex, Plaskolite meet specs now.
"Procurement teams who understand the commodity vs premium split have an opportunity. Lock in relationships on competitive terms. Wait until the project is committed to find supply, options get tighter."
