Pharmacy counters drive me nuts sometimes. You've got maybe half a meter of depth to work with, customers reaching over each other, staff trying to do three things at once. And somebody wants to squeeze a display in there.

We did a job last year for a small chain, four locations. The owner kept asking why glass wasn't an option. Looks more premium, he said. Sure, until your staff wipes it down six times a day with alcohol and it starts looking like frosted glass within two months. I've seen it happen. Acrylic survives that abuse. The material itself-PMMA if you want the technical name-lets through more light than glass anyway. Around 92 percent at 3mm thick. Your products look clearer through acrylic than through glass. Counterintuitive but true.

The cleaning thing isn't minor. Pharmacies have to sanitize constantly. Covid made everyone paranoid about surfaces, and that habit stuck. If your display material can't handle daily disinfectant wipes without clouding up, you've bought yourself a problem.

I keep a folder of reference projects, stuff that made me think differently about display design. One that's still in there is Molecure Pharmacy from Taiwan. Opened in 2017, designed by Waterfrom Design-Nic Lee and his team. Won Interior Design magazine's Best of Year that year. The whole space is unusual, with cobblestone walls and a spiral copper staircase, but what grabbed me was the shelving approach. They used transparent acrylic in this criss-crossing grid pattern. Once you put products on it, the shelving kind of vanishes. The medication boxes become the color and texture in the space. Dezeen and ArchDaily both covered it if you want to look it up.

Now, Molecure is a boutique pharmacy with 120 square meters and probably a design budget most pharmacies can't touch. But the principle travels. Make the fixture disappear. Let the product be the visual. On a counter scale, that means keeping structures minimal-thin profiles, high clarity, no unnecessary frames or brackets eating up sightlines.

Height is where a lot of people mess up. I've walked into pharmacies where the counter display is basically a wall blocking the customer's view of staff. Anything much above 35 centimeters starts doing that. And the stuff at the top? Nobody sees it. People don't look up when they're standing at a counter waiting for a prescription. They look straight ahead or down. So you're optimizing for the middle zone, roughly chest to eye level for an average adult.

Tiered risers work for this. You step products up, three or four centimeters between levels, front low and back high. Simple concept but it opens up sightlines so customers can actually scan what's available without moving things around. The fewer times someone has to ask "what's behind that bottle," the better the display is doing its job.

 

CVS did a redesign push back in 2017-they called the concept Discovery Zones, organizing products by health category instead of the usual merchandising logic. Helena Foulkes was running the pharmacy division then and talked about it in their press announcements. The idea was that someone looking for cold relief shouldn't have to hunt through five different sections to find everything related to colds. Group it together. Makes sense.

For counter displays this means thinking about associations. Lip balm near cold sore treatment. Hand sanitizer near bandages. Vitamins near supplements. Seasonal stuff rotates to prominent spots when it's relevant-allergy meds in spring, sunscreen in summer. Acrylic fixtures make rotation easy. They're light, usually modular, you can swap configurations in a few minutes.

Here's something nobody tells you upfront: acrylic quality varies wildly.

 

The good stuff has edges that feel smooth, almost soft. Flame polishing does that. The joints are nearly invisible because they're solvent welded-the acrylic actually fuses at a molecular level. Cheap stuff has sharp edges you can cut yourself on and glue lines you can see from across the room. In a pharmacy, where everything's supposed to feel clean and trustworthy, a janky display undermines the whole vibe. We've had clients come to us after buying cheap and ask if we can "fix" the edges. You can't really fix bad fabrication. You just start over.
 

Maintenance is less glamorous but matters. Soap and water, soft cloth. That's it. No ammonia, no abrasive pads. Disinfecting wipes are fine. Scratches happen over time-minor ones you can sometimes buff out with plastic polish, deep ones are permanent. Figure three to five years before a counter display starts looking tired enough to replace, depending on traffic.

One more thing. Sunlight. If your counter gets direct sun through a window, standard acrylic yellows gradually. It's not fast-maybe a year or two before you notice-but it happens. UV-resistant acrylic exists. Costs a bit more. Worth specifying if sun exposure is a factor. Finding out after installation that your clear display is turning amber is not a conversation anyone enjoys having.

Most of this comes from doing the work and watching what happens afterward. Pharmacy counter displays aren't complicated in theory. Small space, high visibility, constant cleaning, practical function. Getting all that to come together without the fixture looking cheap or getting in the way-that's the actual job.
