Retail Product Display: Tiered vs Flat Stands
Last quarter a cosmetics brand in Dubai sent us a 4-tier riser design they'd pulled from a competitor's Instagram. Beautiful render. Clean lines. Their visual merchandising team had already approved it. We built the prototype, shipped it over, and two weeks later the procurement manager called back: the bottom tier was completely invisible from standing height, the staff couldn't restock it without removing products from tier 3, and three units had cracked at the bonding joints during unpacking. They ended up switching to a 2-tier with wider spacing. Cost them an extra six weeks and about $4,200 in wasted prototyping.

What Actually Drives the Tiered vs Flat Decision (It's Not What Most Buyers Think)
Most RFQs we receive frame the choice as an aesthetic question. It's not. Or at least, aesthetics should be about fourth on the priority list, after weight load, restocking workflow, and counter dimensions.
Here's what I mean. A tiered acrylic riser for 12 lipstick SKUs occupies roughly 25cm × 15cm of counter space. That same product count laid flat needs 25cm × 40cm. So if your allocated space at a Sephora counter is 30cm deep, the tiered option is your only real choice. The decision just got made by geometry, not by preference.

But flip the scenario. A pharmacy chain displaying supplement bottles that weigh 300-400g each. Four tiers of that weight means the bottom tier carries the cumulative load of everything above it. At 5mm acrylic thickness, you're looking at visible deflection within 8-12 weeks. You'd need 8mm cast acrylic to handle it, which roughly triples the material cost per unit. Or you could go flat, use 5mm material, and the problem disappears.
The point: this is an engineering decision first, a merchandising decision second, and an aesthetic decision last. Every other article I've seen online about display stand comparison ignores this, probably because the people writing them haven't actually had to deal with warranty claims on cracked tiers.
Tiered Displays: Where They Actually Make Money
I'm not going to pretend to be neutral here. For lightweight products under 200g per unit with high SKU variety, tiered displays generate measurably more revenue per square centimeter of counter space. We've seen this across enough projects to be confident about it.
The research backs it up. POPAI's Mass Merchant Shopper Engagement Study found that POP displays generate roughly 40% sales lift on average, with endcap and elevated multi-level placements reaching 346-416% uplift in certain categories. A 2020 study in the Journal of Business and Retail Management Research documented sales increases of 80% to 478% when products were relocated from standard shelving to prominent display positions (jbrmr.com). Those numbers sound aggressive until you see them play out in real deployments.
Why does tiering work in these categories? Eye-tracking research out of Yonsei University (published in Frontiers in Psychology, 2021) tracked where shoppers actually look: the zone between 1.2m and 1.5m from the floor captures the most visual attention, roughly 35% more fixation time than other heights. A 3-tier riser sitting on a standard 90cm counter puts its top two tiers squarely into that zone. The bottom tier? Mostly invisible. Which is useful to know before you specify (and pay for) a fourth tier that nobody will look at.
Confectionery is the strongest use case we've measured internally. Across matched store comparisons for a chocolate brand, tiered displays outperformed flat by 31-38% in weekly unit sales. Impulse-driven, lightweight, visually diverse products on an elevated display near checkout. That's the sweet spot.
But here's what the data also shows, and what tiered display advocates conveniently leave out: for electronics accessories, flat displays outperformed tiered by 7-11% in the same type of matched comparison. The reason had nothing to do with product visibility. The flat displays just stayed fuller during peak hours because staff could restock them in 15-20 seconds instead of the 45-90 seconds a tiered unit requires. An empty display sells nothing regardless of how many tiers it has.
Flat Displays: The Unsexy Choice That Keeps Winning on TCO
Nobody puts flat displays in their marketing portfolio. They don't photograph well. They don't win design awards. And they outsell tiered displays in more retail categories than most people in this industry want to admit.
The operational advantages compound fast. A pharmacy counter running a flat tray system restocks in roughly half the time of an equivalent tiered setup. Over 200 stores and 12 months, that time savings translates to real labor cost. We ran this calculation for a Southeast Asian pharmacy chain in 2024 and the flat tray system cut their display maintenance labor by about 40% compared to the previous tiered configuration.
Weight capacity is the other major factor, and it's one that procurement teams underestimate because the sample they evaluated in the showroom was empty. A 3mm acrylic flat tray holding distributed weight across its surface can support 10-15kg without deflection issues. A 3mm tiered design? Each tier is a cantilevered shelf with concentrated point loads at the mounting positions. Same material, completely different structural behavior. If your products weigh more than 150g per unit, you need to start calculating load paths, not just counting tiers.
Where flat really pulls ahead is in the total cost picture.
The Real Cost Comparison (Not Just Unit Price)
This is the part most display suppliers won't write about, because it makes the premium options look less attractive. But if you're the one signing purchase orders, you need these numbers.

That's a 2.46× difference on TCO, versus the 2.13× difference that unit price alone suggests. The gap gets worse over longer campaigns because tiered designs accumulate damage and wear at a faster rate.
The damage rate difference deserves a closer look. Across roughly 8,400 shipments we tracked between 2023 and 2025, tiered displays arrived with issues (cracked joints, chipped edges, delaminated spacers) at about 8-12% versus 3-5% for flat. More exposed edges, more bonded joints, more protruding elements that catch impact in the container. Each damaged unit costs the replacement plus reshipping plus return processing labor. On a 1,000-unit order, the difference between 10% and 4% damage rate is 60 units you didn't budget for.
Now. Does this mean flat always wins on cost? No. It means you need to run this calculation for your specific program instead of comparing unit prices in a spreadsheet and calling it done. There are categories where the tiered option's sales lift covers the cost premium three or four times over. The confectionery case I mentioned earlier is one. Prestige skincare is another. But you need to do the math, not assume it.
ROI framework we use internally when advising clients:
Annual display ROI = ((incremental profit from sales lift × 12) − total program cost) / total program cost × 100
For that same cosmetics rollout: the brand reported a roughly 20% sales lift in stores with the tiered display versus their previous flat setup, generating approximately $14,800 in incremental annual margin across all locations. Against the $7,514 program cost, that's a 97% first-year ROI. Decent, but not spectacular. The flat display in a different category (electronics accessories) generated only 4% lift but cost $3,057, yielding about $6,200 in incremental margin for a 103% ROI. Similar returns, very different paths.
The takeaway for procurement: ROI is category-dependent, not form-factor-dependent. Run the numbers with your actual margin data before committing to a design direction.
Why Acrylic Type Matters More Than Most Procurement Specs Acknowledge
I want to get specific about material selection because this is where buyers lose the most money through ignorance, and where dishonest suppliers make theirs.

Cast acrylic and extruded acrylic look identical to the naked eye. The difference is in polymer chain length, which affects every downstream property that matters for retail display durability.
Cast is polymerized in a mold. Longer chains. Harder surface. Better chemical resistance. Machines cleanly without softening. Costs 20-30% more. Thickness tolerance is looser (±10%), which most display applications can absorb without issue.
Extruded is pushed through a die in continuous production. Shorter chains. Cheaper. Thermoforms at lower temperatures (useful for curved designs). Tighter thickness tolerance. And here's the critical part: significantly more susceptible to chemical stress cracking.
If you don't know what that means, you need to, because it's the number one failure mode we see on returned displays.
Stress cracking (industry term: crazing) happens when residual stress in the acrylic meets a chemical agent. The stress comes from machining, laser cutting, or thermoforming. The chemical agent is usually whatever the retail staff cleans the display with. After COVID, that's typically 70% isopropyl alcohol. Stress plus alcohol equals a network of microscopic cracks that turn a clear display milky and brittle within weeks.
Experienced fabricators on Signs101 (the largest professional signage forum) have documented this pattern extensively. One veteran noted that flame polishing creates exactly the kind of residual edge stress that makes acrylic vulnerable, and that the cracking typically appears about a week after cleaning with solvents. Practical spec guidance for procurement:
One more thing on material. If your supplier says "imported acrylic" without naming the sheet manufacturer, that's not a spec. That's marketing. Push for the brand. Mitsubishi (Shinkolite), Evonik/Röhm (Plexiglas), Plaskolite for US-sourced, or one of the verified Chinese mills if cost is the primary driver. The brand tells you the quality; "imported" tells you nothing.
How This Plays Out Across Different Retail Categories
I'll go through the five categories we work with most, but I'm going to be direct about our bias: we manufacture both tiered and flat, and we recommend flat more often than our clients initially expect. That's not because we prefer making simpler products (we don't; tiered commands higher unit pricing). It's because flat generates fewer warranty claims and more repeat orders from satisfied buyers.
Beauty and cosmetics is the one category where tiered genuinely earns its premium almost every time. Products are light, visually diverse, and sell partly on presentation hierarchy. Specification requirements are strict though: cast acrylic is non-negotiable because perfume and cosmetic formulations contain solvents that craze extruded material within months. Diamond polish on visible edges. 5mm tiers minimum. Expect 15-18 working days from approved prototype.
Electronics accessories is a split. Tiered works for lightweight items (cables, earbuds, phone cases) in branded island displays. The moment you're displaying power banks, portable speakers, or anything above 200g, switch to flat or you'll be dealing with sagging tiers by month four. Demo stations where customers pick up and replace products should always be flat; tiered demo displays accumulate alignment issues fast.
Food retail goes flat in almost every scenario. Restocking speed beats visual hierarchy in high-velocity categories. The exception is impulse confectionery at checkout, where tiered displays deliver the strongest relative performance advantage we've measured. FDA compliance for food-contact applications is handled at the material level (food-grade acrylic meets 21 CFR 177.1010), but the design needs to allow full removal and washdown, which is easier with flat tray systems.
Pharmacy is flat, full stop. Limited counter depth, mixed product weights, aggressive cleaning schedules, accessibility requirements, and loss prevention sightline concerns. Tiered displays in pharmacy create monitoring blind spots. The 200-location chain project I mentioned earlier switched from tiered to flat modular trays and cut restocking time 40%.
Fashion accessories and jewelry is the outlier where the decision is genuinely aesthetic. Sunglasses, watches, premium accessories sell on emotional response. Tiered creates a "stage" effect that reinforces premium perception. But this only works if the products are light enough to not stress the display and the store doesn't rearrange displays frequently. High-churn accessory retail (think fast fashion chains that reset displays weekly) should use flat trays with interchangeable dividers.
What to Evaluate When You're Comparing Suppliers
I'm not going to list every possible question because that would be a procurement guide, not a blog post. But there are a few qualification signals that separate manufacturers who actually make displays from traders who source them.
Ask to see a cross-section of a bonded joint on a sample. Proper solvent welding produces optically clear joints. If you see cloudiness, whitening, or tiny bubbles, the bonding process isn't controlled. This is the single fastest quality check in acrylic fabrication and most buyers never think to ask for it.
Ask about annealing. This is the slow-heat stress-relief step after machining or laser cutting. It adds time and cost (typically 12 hours per half-inch of thickness at around 170°F), which is exactly why budget suppliers skip it. Unannealed displays work fine for the first few months, then craze when cleaning solvents hit the stressed edges. If the person on the other end of the email doesn't know what annealing is, you're not talking to a manufacturer.
Ask for tooling costs separated from unit price. We've covered why this matters. The honest answer is usually $300-$800 for tiered designs, $100-$300 for flat. If the answer is "$0 for tooling," the cost is buried in the per-unit price and you've lost negotiating leverage on future reorders when the tooling already exists.
Damage rates on recent shipments. Any supplier tracking quality systematically will know this number off the top of their head. If they have to "check and get back to you," they're not tracking it at the level you need for a multi-location rollout.
There are other indicators we look for when evaluating whether someone is serious about procurement or just collecting quotes. But those are conversation-level details, not blog-post material.
The Replacement Cycle Question
Acrylic displays in moderate retail conditions last 3-5 years if properly specified. Low-contact environments (museums, showcases) can stretch to 7-10 years. The primary killers are crazing from improper cleaning, UV yellowing from window exposure, and mechanical damage from staff handling.
Realistic replacement planning: 18-24 months in high-traffic retail (cosmetics, food), 36-48 months in lower-traffic settings (electronics, pharmacy). These assume proper cleaning products (acrylic-safe, no ammonia, no alcohol on flame-polished surfaces) and staff who don't use box cutters near polished edges.
For campaign planning this matters: if your deployment is under 6 months, go flat almost regardless of category. The lower unit cost and damage rate make the TCO argument overwhelming for short campaigns. The sales lift advantage of tiered displays needs at least 8-12 months of accumulated revenue to offset the cost premium in most categories.
For permanent installations, the math changes. A well-engineered tiered display amortizes its premium over enough sales cycles to justify the investment in categories where visibility drives purchase decisions. But "well-engineered" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and it starts with specifying the right material, the right thickness, and the right finishing process.
Our production floor has a rough decision rule that's held up surprisingly well: if the product fits in your palm and weighs less than a smartphone, tiered will probably pay for itself. Anything bigger or heavier, go flat and put the savings into better signage. That's not a joke, by the way. POPAI research found that adding effective point-of-sale signage to any display format generates 20%+ lift on its own. Sometimes the smartest display investment isn't a fancier display. It's a clearer message on the one you already have.
